The setting up of the UP College of Science Institute Libraries was initially envisioned by Dr. Caesar Saloma in 2007, during the start of his 3-year tenure as CS Dean which was coterminous with then CSLIB Head Librarian, Mrs. Jocelyn Razal. In April 2011, the actual setup of the Institute Libraries happened during the term of the current CSLIB Head Librarian, Mrs. Marie Antoinette Villaflor. Concurrently, it was during this time that most of the new building of CS Institutes were finally built in the National Science Complex; thus, spaces were provided for the Institute Libraries. The initial phase in the establishment of the institute libraries was supervised by Mrs. Susannah V. Deasis until 2013. Currently, Ms. Fraymon Joy P. Cruz is assisting the Head Librarian in supervising and improving the physical and digital learning spaces of the nine (9) Institute Libraries to support the College in its basic functions of instruction, research and extension services.
The Institute of Chemistry Library is strategically located at the 1st floor of the IC Teaching Building, Room T1114, College of Science Complex, University of the Philippines.
The physical library is open from Monday to Friday, operating at full capacity from 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Clients can visit, borrow books, conduct research, connect to wifi, use computers and charge their electronic devices at no cost.
The library houses and circulates more than 440 volumes of print books covering highly specialized topics in chemistry. These are classified according to Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and displayed in an open shelf where readers can go directly to the shelf and select books they would need. All books may be checked out with a current validated UP identification card for a loan periods of two weeks.
The library holds a collection of around 970 titles of print thesis and dissertations written by IC students. These can be easily accessed and retrieved using the library’s in-house database –the ABCD. Access to ABCD is made through the internet and it can be used remotely by users all at the same time.
Currently, the library has approximately 350 e-books and subscribed to an electronic database called American Chemical Society (ACS) Publications with 68 scientific journals covering various fields in chemistry accessible on and off campus through Open Athens.
