History

The College of Science Library (CSLIB) was founded following the establishment of the College of Science by the Board of Regents at its 962nd meeting on October 26, 1983.  After its inauguration on June 24, 1987 at the initiative of the institution’s first dean, Dr. Roger Posadas, the library has been instrumental in the College’s primary functions of education, research, and extension activities.

From 1987 until 1994, the CSLIB functioned as a traditional library, with a collection primarily comprised of print works moved from the U.P. Main Library and the National Science Research Institute. It used the card catalog and printed abstracts and indexes to gain access to information. Interlibrary borrowing was restricted to the University of the Philippines System and nearby university libraries.

Mrs. Lourdes T. David, its previous Head Librarian, assumed the leadership of the DOST-ESEP Library Network in 1992. The acquisition of an integrated library software called “TINLIB” marked the start of its automation effort. In 1993, CSLIB received a UNESCO grant that funded infrastructure upgrades in the library.

On its 25th anniversary, it took on a larger building from the old CSLAB, which was converted to CSLIB. The renovation is part of the library’s improvement project, which aims to give more facilities and services to its patrons. In order to meet the increasing demand of users, the library expanded its offerings by establishing institute libraries. This one-of-a-kind configuration will eventually help with service customization and modification to meet the individual needs of library users.

In 2007, Dr. Caesar Saloma envisioned the establishment of the UP College of Science Institute Libraries at the start of his three-year tenure as CS Dean which coincided with Mrs. Jocelyn Razal’s appointment as CSLIB Head Librarian. The Institute Libraries were officially established in April 2011 during the tenure of the current CSLIB Head Librarian, Mrs. Marie Antoinette Villaflor. Concurrently, most of the new CS Institute buildings were eventually erected in the National Science Complex during this period, providing room for the Institute Libraries.

Mrs. Susannah V. Deasis supervised the early establishment of the institute libraries until 2013.  Mx. Fraymon Joy P. Cruz is now assisting the Head Librarian in managing and modernizing the physical and digital learning spaces of the College’s nine (9) Institute Libraries to support the core tasks of instruction, research, and extension activities.
